CODIFICATION
Many organizations struggle with analyses they can’t properly perform, designs that aren’t robust enough, and practices they want to standardize but can’t. Whether it’s changeovers, routing analysis, demand pattern recognition, production planning and scheduling, defining kanban loops or cards, or designing assembly lines, the underlying issue is the same: expertise is scattered, methods inconsistent, and Excel looks like a fragile scrapbook.
Codification captures proven methods, models, and logic and turns them into clear, user‑friendly, reusable tools that bring structure, speed, and high‑quality decision‑making to everyday operational work.
Codification grows directly out of our own project work, where real constraints, real data, and real operational challenges expose what methods actually work. Tools are developed “by IE, for IE”: field‑tested, constraint‑aware, and shaped by the practical realities of factory shop floors, assembly lines, warehouses, and planning environments.
I use these tools continuously in my own client work, refining them as new insights emerge. Each tool captures a way of thinking that has proven itself in practice, translating it into a clear, structured, and user‑friendly form that teams can rely on long after the project ends.
Codification gives teams a consistent, reliable way to approach recurring analysis, engineering, design or operational questions, without reinventing or relying on fragile and personal spreadsheets. It brings structure to complex decisions, accelerates modelling and scenario work, and raises the overall quality of analysis, planning and design.
With clear, reusable tools, organizations gain repeatability, transparency, and a shared method that scales across teams and sites. The result is faster execution, more robust outcomes, and a more professional and disciplined way of working in daily operations.
APPLICATIONS
The applications developed through Codification translate the principles above into concrete, usable assets. Each one captures a proven method or way of thinking and turns it into something teams can apply directly in their operational work. What follows is a growing collection of these applications—practical, field‑tested tools that support analysis, modelling, planning, and design across a wide range of environments. Together, they show how Codification becomes tangible and how structured methods can be put to work in day‑to‑day operations.
An advanced and integrated Excel platform for line and operator balancing, tooling planning, and line‑side storage design. It provides a structured environment for modelling assembly processes, exploring bottlenecks, comparing line and operator balance scenarios, and evaluating tooling and storage needs with clarity and consistency.
An application for analyzing demand patterns across volume, variability, frequency, and urgency. It provides structured classifications and clear visualisations that reveal item behaviour, helping teams understand how different items behave and supporting more robust supply chain, planning and inventory management strategies and decisions.
An application for analyzing changeover behaviour through the number, duration, and frequency of product switches. It provides insights into machine‑level EPEI, highlighting where flow and flexibility can be increased through shorter, more frequent changeovers. The analysis supports SMED‑driven improvement in machine‑heavy and job‑shop environments.
An application for analyzing routing structures in job‑shop environments using rank order clustering (ROC) to reveal dominant flows and value‑streams. It provides structured insights into routing similarity, machine groupings, and flow opportunities, supporting clearer decisions on layout, scheduling, and improving flow in complex, high‑mix operations.
An application for designing withdrawal and production kanban loops based on item consumption, loop elements and replenishment times. It supports the calculation of the kanban loops, the determination of kanban quantities, and the generation and printing of kanban for all items, enabling a correct and robust deployment of pull flow in factory operations.
Upcoming additions to the Codification suite that will extend the range of modelling and analytical capabilities available to operations, engineering and supply chain teams in the near future. Development is ongoing, and suggestions for new tools or challenges to address are welcome as the suite continues to evolve and expand. Contact us for any bespoke development needs.
